In the summer of 1981, Nancy got her PhD in a ceremony in Ames at Iowa State University. During the Fall semester at University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, Nancy was given the title of Assistant Professor of Computer Science. Although I was teaching 2 classes, I was becoming more involved with the university administration. I was constantly in meetings with the Associate Dean of the College, the Dean of the College, the Director of the Computer Center, the Vice Chancelor, and occasionally with the Chancelor himself. The department was growing every semester so I was always working to get more teachers, more office space, more computer time, more equipment. Outside of the department I was the fair-haired boy, the university was very happy that we were bringing in more and more students. Inside the department it was a constant struggle with the two tenured full professor former department chairs who still wanted to run the place with me as their gofer. It wasn’t a good situation but I had hope. |
